Blepharitis
Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids. Blepharitis patients suffer from red, swollen eyelids with crusts in the eyelashes.
Treatment for blepharitis includes warm compresses that help thin the oil inside the glands. It can be very frustrating to apply hot water compresses that cool down 30 seconds later. For hot compresses to be effective, they must remain on your eyelids for 10 to 12 minutes. Heated masks that can be heated in the microwave are much more effective. They can be worn like a mask and stay warm for much longer.
No more baby shampoo!
Eyelid hygiene is very important in the treatment of blepharitis. There are a number of eyelid cleansers available over the counter. Always make sure to use a cleanser intended for eyelids. We no longer recommend the use of diluted baby shampoo. Baby shampoo is not intended for the eyelids. It contains synthetic detergents that can alter the normal pH of tears. Many patients develop allergies to the ingredients and can obstruct oil-secreting glands. This can actually do more harm than good.
Mites in my eyelashes?
The latest research shows that blepharitis is often associated with Demodex mites. Demodex is a parasite that lives on our skin. In blepharitis, demodex multiplies and causes infection of the eyelid and oil-secreting glands in the tears. Demodex is best treated with cleansers containing tea tree oil such as Blephadex Eyelid Cleanser.
Are my watery eyes dry?
Blepharitis is often associated with dry eyes. In blepharitis, the glands become blocked and do not secrete enough oils to keep the eye from drying out. Since the oily part of the tears is deficient, the tears will evaporate quickly. Your tear gland ends up producing more of the watery part of the tears and your eyes water more. Patients often present with watery eyes and are surprised to learn that the diagnosis is actually dry eye! Symptoms of dryness can be alleviated with artificial tears that help the lipid layer of the tear film.
